Lot of interest at Bonhams

I spotted this lot in a sale coming up at Bonhams in London next week, and thought it might be of interest to someone here. A set of 18 lithographs of men's fashion from the 1930s. http://www.bonhams.com/auctions/22619/lot/296/ Some great looking outfits in there. Would do nicely for the dressing ro...

Fortnum and Mason

Today I have received an email from Fortnum and Mason inviting me to enter a competition to win a hamper. A couple of weeks ago they sent me a booklet in the post advertising their christmas selection. I have been a customer of theirs for years (I suppose I gave them my details at some point along t...

Re: Suitable London pad for the dapper gent

For me the Chesterfield Street house has a small sitting room, dining room and kitchen and bedrooms which are too large and has to many bathrooms. My daughter has a similar Georgian town house and the narrowness of the door plus one window style causes limitations but then she did not pay 9,000,000...

Re: Suitable London pad for the dapper gent

Gosh lucky Kate - I much prefer the Highgate house too. She will be a neighbour there, I believe, of Sting. I couldn't imagine living around Mayfair in any case; all your neighbours would be gentleman's clubs, embassies or hedge funds, not a real neighbourhood.

Suitable London pad for the dapper gent

I'm sure some of you noticed this in the press last week, but for those who didn't and are seeking a pied a terre with a bit of sartorial history attached, the former London home of Beau Brummell and Anthony Eden is up for sale. Details - http://homesandproperty.zoopla.co.uk/for-sale/details/1811391...

Re: Good shirtmaker in UK

I use to get shirts from Russell and Hodge until a few years ago. There is indeed a workshop clearly visible at the back of their shop, with sewing machines, shears, paper patterns all on view, and all looking very pretty and appropriate. The only thing usually missing was anyone actually using said...

Re: Dark blazer buttons

I occasionally walk past "The Button Queen" shop off Wigmore St and glance through the window. They generally have a number of vintage sets of blazer buttons in black (not quite sure what they are made of) - so that was obviously a popular choice once upon a time. I have been tempted to try it mysel...

Re: Spring cabrio coat

Michael, great idea! It's something between pumpkin and egg yolk. It's a cloth woven locally, cathach, I don't even know if it's still available anymore. I have it in charcoal, too. Very sturdy and resilient. Holds a crease like sheet iron, but drapes well. However, I think I am in, too, for an LL ...

Re: A satisfactory neckline, in those cold days ...

I'll put in a word for wool-mix shirts. They won't solve your problem completely, but for those days when a 100% cotton shirt is a little chilly, you'd be surprised how much warmer you'll be in a shirt with just 10% wool mixed in with the cotton. When it gets really cold, 100% merino undershirts are...

Re: Reasonable timescales for bespoke?

Well I'm relatively new to the bespoke process myself, but the timescale you describe doesn't sound too bad, given they warned you at the start of possible delay. I think tailors, like builders, suffer from incurable optimism when it comes to how long a job will take. I have tried three different ta...

Re: The Ultimate Flaneur whiskey and cigar suit?

Despos wrote:My favorite would be flannel in a shade I call Fawn. A melange of grey with tan that looks dirty and dusty. Rare to find but it exists. I have it in the shop with a muted chalk stripe.
A great suggestion - I have been looking for and failing to find something in fawn for a while... :(

Re: The END is near ...

I walked past Budd yesterday and noted it has reopened. Was in a bit of a hurry so didn't go in, but glimpsed through the window the refurbishment does not seem to have been too radical - some new woodwork and generally a bit lighter.

Has anyone been in?
