Or perhaps his distinction had to do with being in a celebratory v. sombre mood.

Re: Rendenbach soles - are they comfortable?

Think about this: you can have the same tires on a Ferrari and a Rolls-Royce, but the suspension and soft ride of the Rolls Royce won't be duplicated on the Ferrari just by using Rolls-Royce tires. The sole is there to protect the rest of the shoe from the elements and your feet from touching the gr...

Re: Morning Suit - advice sought please

For what its worth - The King’s more formal morning wear set up (the one he wore for his wedding to the Queen) features a black tailcoat with a plain - not herringbone - weave and black silk piping. I think it looks very good especially when he wears a shirt with a light coloured body (always with ...

Re: Rendenbach soles - are they comfortable?

Now Jim McFarland, the US agent for J.R. and who was the one who first announce the information that the tannery were to close down, went out in some social media groups yesterday and presented the latest news in this saga. The fellow German tannery Kilger have bought the recipe and rights to J.R. b...

Re: Rendenbach soles - are they comfortable?

There is a video of a factory tour of Rendenbach where they go into details of the benefits of their tanning process. Someone would have to buy two identical pairs of shoes with Rendenbach and regular soles and wear them in identical conditions to really find out. Until then, consider that automobil...

Hand-made buttonhole appears in White House

Hand-made anything in mens clothing is rare in US politics. Ready-to-wear or expensive but cheap-looking suits, and in some cases, truly cheap, clothes have been the order of the day in Washington, so as not to offend the electorate. But now, as the official portrait of the newly elected Vice Presid...

Re: Blazer style choices

Both flat and domed buttons are ordinarily shanked, rather than with holes. The key with shanked is to sink them deep into the fabric so they don't have a discernible bounce. You can tell in the photo above, because looking at the non-functional buttons on the front, their domed lips are flat agains...

My go-to blazer is in the old 15oz Minnis Fresco. Flapped hacking pockets, and gold buttons but made up with a one-button front and one-button cuff which limits the ‘trophy cabinet’ effect.
Gold buttons, "the trophy cabinet effect", last summer.

Re: Winter footwear in a formal context

The semiotics of the issue are highly context dependent anyway. In a former life I found myself taking a year-long chemistry course at night at Harvard. The professor was a senior faculty member, an old-time Cambridge man and former head of a Harvard research lab, who in the winter taught in a thre...

Re: Overcoat lining

Thanks, perhaps I should request a pure silk or regular lining then. Which do you think is better? Pure silk, while traditional, and still used for formal clothing, is simply not as durable as regular lining. Silk can be used, and is beautiful, on things like white tie tailcoats, but these are not ...
