Re: Style in the Practice of Law
I have a very distinct memory of London when I was there on honeymoon in September of 1984. I was walking along Piccadilly, just east of Park Road on my way to meet someone at the Athenaeum. I passed an older gentleman, at least in his 60s (I was 30) who was wearing a navy, pin-striped, three piece ...

Re: Style in the Practice of Law
I make this observation from things that I've heard and by drawing conclusions from what I've observed over the years. A family friend, a lawyer in private practice, had two wardrobes. His was a civil practice that included state and federal courts. His choice of properly dressed or dumbed-down (for...

Re: Style in the Practice of Law
For various cultural and historical reasons, we lawyers in America do not have the formality or uniformity of court attire of the British and Europeans. I suspect that it has to do with the informal legal training and the rough frontier settings as we settled the Eastern wilds and moved way out to t...

Re: This is a pipe smoking zone
Gentlemen, I ardently commend you to The Original Tinder Box in Santa Monica, California. I have been going for years for cigars and various pipe tobaccos. They have been located at the corner of Wilshire Blvd and Harvard since 1928. In fact, the Tinder Box saved my life, quite literally. I would ha...

P.S. As your attorney, I feel that I should advise you of the following caveats appended to the foregoing glove cleaning suggestions: No warranties are expressed or implied; Past performance is no guarantee of future results; Ask your doctor or pharmacist; So you don't forget, call before midnight t...

Re: Day gloves with a business suit
Gentlemen, Thanks very much. The weather in Los Angeles and environs has finally shifted from May Grey and June Gloom to full summer. It was in the high 80s downtown yesterday, July 1st, a bit early this year. I was still wearing a three-piece wool suit on Thursday. A week or so ago, I switched to c...

Re: Day gloves with a business suit
Thanks, Andy. I've looked at as many Esky/AA pix as I could find, and gloves were not included in any of the warm-weather summer wear pictures. I have no problem with appearing to be eccentric, or even a dandy wearing gloves the rest of the year, but, like my wife, I was concerned that gloves would ...

Day gloves with a business suit
Gentlemen, A brief history: I am a Los Angeles D.A. I have worn a gentleman's hat to work for the last 22 years: snap brim, black derby, grey homburg, fedora, skimmer and optimo crown panama. When I started, I was the only D.A. There was one other lawyer, a defense lawyer from the good old days, who...

Re: Anglicisms and Americanisms
'Bent as a nine-bob note' is an Anglicism for the American 'crooked as a dog's hind leg' referring to a thief, or, crook.

Re: Hollywood icons and their wardrobe choices
It has been my understanding that, in the 30s, at least, the actors were required to supply their own wardrobe. The studios, always on the cheap, required this as a cost-saving measure. For example, Bogart supplied his own suit for Maltese Falcon . Notice it's one suit for the entire movie (no wardr...
