Re: What sort of hat is appropriately worn with a "stroller"
A slightly different answer from me, I break the rules a little bit with headwear with regards to both strollers (or black lounge) and black tie. Whilst the homburg is the most correct option, I go with a black wool flat cap (one of the stiff moulded wool type). It is much more informal, but in this...

Thinking of trying Japanese...
Dear Loungers, I've been thinking for some time now of taking the plunge and giving traditional Japanese clothing a try. I have enjoyed getting to understand our own European style better over the passed few years, and have gone from some very radical experiments (that insane suede tailcoat) to a mu...

Re: Dinner suit for dinner?
I have two suggestions. The first is to go with the dinner suit... but not full black tie. I frequently what is basically full black tie minus the dress shirt and bow tie and instead just wear a deep burgundy shirt (which I spruced up a bit by replacing the boring old buttons with some new shiny but...

Re: Silk Mix
I have a pair of charcoal grey trousers that are 85% wool, 15% silk. It may be a bit shiny for some (I do have to be a little cautious about what I wear them with), but the real beauty of them is how comfortable they are. Some woollen trousers can itch like buggery, but these part silk trousers feel...

Discuss: spare trousers vs.
Dear Loungers, So here is something I have been thinking about a little bit. I frequently see advice that getting a second pair of trousers with a suit is a good idea, because they wear out quicker than the jacket. Fairly obvious, and all very well. However, I've also seen advice that the components...

Re: Silk trousers - advice and opinions sought
Thanks for the opinions. I think I am going to have to get my friend to have a look at me wearing them in a couple different lights, the shininess depends a lot on the angle you view this particular fabric blend (like with velvet), it's not really possible to tell looking down at them when you're we...

Silk trousers - advice and opinions sought
Evening, fellow Loungers. Another attempt to solicit advice or opinions from your goodly selves. I picked up a second-hand pair of wool trousers with a fair measure of silk in them. They are charcoal grey with a birdseye pattern in them (which is not really discernable from a distance, and therefore...

Design of rental frock coats - historical precedence?
Gentlemen, Just a little question. I've seen pictures of the frock coats that many of the formal wear hire companies have (i.e. Moss Bros, Debenhams etc.), and generally speaking, their frock coats always look like dresscoats with skirts going all the way around the bottom, rather than just limited ...

Re: Matching waistcoat and trousers.
My normal outfit at work consists of white shirt, cream or tan trousers, tie and a navy waistcoat (the jacket colour is almost irrelevant as I always take it off at work). Personally, I don't like having my waistcoat match anything else (unless it's a dinner suit, or perhaps a matching flat cap). If...

Where can I get a satin batwing bow tie?
Simply question, as the title suggests: where can I get a satin batwing bow tie to go with my satin-lapelled dinner suit? I can find plenty of butterfly/thistle bow ties in satin, but all the batwings I've found have always been barathea, which won't make my suit. Any help? Thanks.

Re: Lapel terminology
Indeed - I currently own two single-breasted jackets with pointed lapels - one in black for dancing, one navy pin-stripe for being dressy during the day.Costi wrote:"double-breasted lapel" because it is typical of the double-breasted coat, but it can appear on a SB coat, as well.

Green black tie waistcoat
So, I've got a black tie work do coming up - obviously a nice opportunity to trot out my dinner suit. A friend of mine makes clothes for me, primarily dance costumes, but now she's making me a backless bottle green silk scooped waistcoat. I was pondering a little today, and I'm aware of the favour i...

Re: Lapel terminology
Calling stepped/notch/normal single-breasted lapels normal seems sensible, since they are the natural shape that lapels take when unaltered, but calling a pointed/peaked lapel a "double-breasted lapel" just seems daft - too much of a mouthful. I do like "winged" though - sounds very fancy. Think I'l...

Lapel terminology
Kind of a technical question here, given that I'm relatviely still new to all this, and don't have direct contact to discuss it with anyone here in the UK, what terms to do people use here for the different styles of lapel? ON wikipedia for example, I've been given the terms stepped collar, pointed ...
