I'm not quite sure what you mean about still and soft marcella: According to Budd, marcella became popular because it soaked up starch more effectively than plain cotton, which is the more formal style. Stiffness in the shirt front is achieved by the starch sticking the two or three layers of the sh...

Finally becoming fed up with the extortionate costs of sending shirts away to be re-starched, I decided last week to do it myself. What did I discover? That all of this chat (and there is so much of it online) about the risks of burning the shirt or turning the starch yellow or the process taking th...

Inspired by this post, I watched the film again. The frockcoat seems in fact to be a 6 x 4, but he only ever uses the lowest button to fasten it (there is a very clear shot after the [first!] funeral - where he does wear a plain black waistcoat). It's a great shame they are out of fashion - and that...

Peter Conway

I am just about to move to Southampton, and I was looking around town today. I came across Peter Conway at 16 Bedford Place. Has anyone used them/ seen any of their work? The prices I were quoted were a mere fraction of London ones!

I'd love to, the only problem in the event was not having a pale enough tie. I don't have any means of putting a picture online. If you liked I could e-mail it and you could post it up, if you were able.

Thanks for the reply; I've a white shirt, but since the soft collar does look rather small especially with a db waistcoat I was thinking about investing in a seperate collar+shirt anyway.

Colour suggestions for morning dress

Being a student I can't afford tailoring for myself but I've just had a stroke of luck in Hornets in Kensington. I've found - all vintage bespoke - a tailcoat in black (1937), very dark (only very thin stripes of light grey between two dark grey coloured stripes) striped high-backed trousers, and a ...
