Re: Gumboots

While not exactly Wellingtons I quite like the LL Bean Hunter Boots, which are warm, comfortable and durable. They do ship overseas, but I would recommend buying these in store in the US as their sizing is a bit tricky. They do have a very particular look (which I like, having worn them from the tim...

Re: quality of this good year welted shoe?

I would advise against sticking a rubber sole on top of the leather one; it will allow moisture to accumulate and linger between rubber and leather, rotting away the lovely leather sole you wish to protect. Just find yourself a good cobbler and go for a resole, if needed. (As Merc already said, meta...

Re: Cove & Co in Germany

A friend of mine used them for his wedding (the Cologne Branch) They are MTM, decent quality and fit but somewhat costly, he paid 1700€ for a three piece suit in a standard fabric, which would get you a bespoke suit at one of the "cheaper" tailors in London. You can choose from a few books, they do ...

Re: Ralph Lauren Purple Label White tie and Black tie

The Problem with designer clothes is, in my opinion, that they are under constant pressure to "innovate", i.e. produce something different from what they did last season. Especially for formal evening clothes, that spells disaster. Unless you crave to be known as an eccentric (or worse), I would adv...

Re: Is a Rolex watch with diamonds too gaudy?

Hello, Rolex make very good watches, the drawback is that the brand is so universally known to be expensive that it is hard to wear a Rolex without some (at least for me unwanted) attention. On the plus side, Rolex make some of the best watches around, that will probably last for generations. Hence ...

Re: Silk Knots

The silk knots you usually find are actually made of elastic -- and usually supplied with new shirts, a use they are very well suited for. Some people use them as a cheap way of introducing a larger variety of colours to their dress, but I would prefer a few decent cufflinks to scores of colourful k...

Re: Antoniou or Sims & MacDonald vs the Georges

C&L are *definitely* worth a try, the only thing that put me off was that the tailor told me he would need 3 fittings at least for the unlined coat I enquired about. Generally a very good thing, but since my stays in the city are limited in number, not an option for me. Also, I was quoted around 170...

Re: Antoniou or Sims & MacDonald vs the Georges

Having used both Sims & Macdonald and George (Cleveland Street) I think I can at least help you with a few brief observations on the two firms: Sims ==== Process: Sims cut on premises and have the tailoring done in the London Area – I have not yet found out whether this is in a workshop or outwork. ...

Re: First bespoke suit, London

Hello LL, first let me thank you for admitting me to the London Lounge! I believe the reason for George's shop having been "boarded up" might be found in him having been on holiday for a few weeks during the summer. I was measured for a suit at his (at the time definitely open) shop on Cleveland Str...
