A Gentleman's Distress

My trips to my tailor are supposed to be enjoyable. Often, they’re the highlight of what are more often than not trying weeks keeping body, soul, and family together – plus making sure the kids have done their homework. So, imagine my chagrin when this week I found myself with dueling tailors. This ...

I love a black calfskin or cordovan loafer with houndstooth or dark grey trousers paired with a navy blazer. I also have a pair of black split toe bluchers that I think works well with that combination. I was raised to believe it was okay to wear brown shoes with suits before 6 pm, but that after 6 ...

I also have a problem with cutting myself while shaving, although nowhere near as bad as what you describe. Here is what I recommend. Schick makes a razor called the "protector" that has thin wires wrapping the blades to prevent you from cutting too close. I've used this razor myself in the past and...

Exactly. It's not a good idea to "grind" the cloth on an entire garment when you're not in fact removing something that's ground in. So the stiff side is for that specific purpose, but stick to the soft side when all you need is a touch up.

Taylors Almond or Rose. I also use a locally made cream called Frasers that's popular with barber shops up here.

I swear by the Dents lambswool lined with wrist snaps. I have seen some dubious stuff carrying the Dent name, mostly on web sites but have never run across it in shops, so I can't attest to the veractiy of the offerings.

I have been trying to get ahold of a pack of Feather Platinums but find they are not available in Toronto (if someone knows better, please advise me). I tried to order them through one of the gents shaving products web site, but unfortunately Canada Customs got ahold of the package and decided to ch...

Ah, yes, the downhill slide of the father's wardrobe. Such a sad thing to watch, especially when most of us probably saw our first custom-made labels when going through dad's closet without permission. I would subtly suggest you remind your dad that he loved the shawl collar for 40 years, so why cha...

Davis did indeed shop at J. Press. My father was at Julliard at the time and went there and to Brooks as well as some smaller clothing shops with him – although unlike Miles, my dad’s music career was cut short. My father got off the train from Connecticut at 125th St. and met Miles walking through ...
