Re: Apparel Arts and Esquire Images

As you may recall following publication of his book "The Suit" modeled on "The Prince" Manton proposed to write a book on AA modeled on Machiavelli's "Discourses on the First Ten Books of Titus Livy". The project came to naught because of the difficulty in obtaining rights from Conde Nast who owns t...

Re: Dinner suit in midnight blue

A number of sophisticated dressers have opined that the width of "ideal" trouser bottoms are 3/4 the length of the foot. Is that when cut, or when worn? I believe it to be 3/4 as cut, resulting approx. 2/3 as worn. Of course, as Couch's astute post of the 25th makes clear, any rule of thumb at best...

Re: Dinner suit in midnight blue

[...] I can't wait to wear it for the first time later in the fall. Thank you, BB; looking forward to reading more from you on that occasion! I like that it's less drapey than usual (from what I can tell from two pictures). I would say 1920's more than '30s, because of the close(r) fit of the coat,...

No doubt they are taking advantage of an opportunity to get close to you. I, on the other hand, am too old to induce such urges.

synthetic boutonniere revisited

In that buying single flowers on a daily basis is at worst impossible, at best inconvenient, three years ago the legendary Etutee asked if anyone knew of a satisfactory synthetic boutonniere. http://thelondonlounge.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=10479&p=60212&hilit=boutonniere#p60212 Unfortunately, t...

Shoes with white, or off white, linen suit

Gentlemen:

In my house, when the Christmas lights come down it is time to begin to think about summer. What shoes do you wear, or would wear, with a white, or off white, linen suit?

Re: Overcoats

Arkirshner, what about the different nuances of navy? Like I said, mine is so dark it practically looks like black; the second one in my post is a lot more like what I had in mind. Yes, there are almost an infinite shades, tints, tones, nuances as you put it, of navy cloth. I liken the existence of...

High buttoning stance, ticket pocket, pick-stitching, and slanted pockets; are these all standard?
The ticket and slanted (hacking) pockets are not standard on Chesterfields, they are more properly elements of country coats.

Re: Overcoats

I just had my first MTM overcoat made; I went with the classic navy Crombie. I had one alteration made though, I removed the breast pocket for a cleaner look. I was a bit skeptical at first when I saw the coat thinking it looked black, but then I checked the Crombie website and found theirs (100% C...
