Building a Custom Closet/Wardrobe

I am wondering how you store your bespoke clothing both in the short and long term. What drew my attention to this question was the setup of the Duke of Windsor portrayed in the catalogue of his items -- his trousers, for example, were folded over and hung from what looked like the back of the door ...

Re: Hand-sewing

Many thanks for the reply, Mr. Shattuck. What you describe is very interesting; it's a tribute to you and your commitment to craftsmanship that you keep such methods alive. Probably even many of your customers do not realize that you do this extra work. It's probably impossible to put those differen...

Hand-sewing

In re-watching the BBC Savile Documentary I was intrigued by the discussion of hand-sewing. There seems to be a kind of intramural debate among tailors regarding which parts of a garment can be done just as well in the hands of a bespoke tailor using a sewing machine and other parts necessitating ha...

Loden Cloth

Hello, Could anyone suggest a source for loden cloth by the meter? I'm looking to use it in a bespoke coat project; my tailor requires me to supply him with cloth, so I will need to find it myself. So far, I haven't had any luck. All I've found is already made up into RTW garments. Thanks. H. Richard

Re: Madder

David Hober, in modern silk used for ties and scarves, is the dye madder or synthetic? I will let Mr. Hober speak for himself here, but he has said before that for some time now most "madder" silks have not been derived from natural dyes--the natural dyes present some sort of environmental problem....

I have several pairs of shell cordovan shoes by Alden, in #8 and cigar. I read on Will's blog that due to the nature of the material these shoes are excellent to wear in the rain, and this seems to be confirmed by a few posts on LL. My question is whether they can be worn without harm from the sort ...

I have a Pashley Roadster Sovereign (5 speed) and like it very much. It's a bit heavy, though, and it's hard to climb hills.

Is the difference between real ancient madder (using natural dye) and modern madder obviously apparent to the eye? I will be shopping for a few madder ties in London next week and plan to look at both the Drakes and Budd offerings. I'm not at all sure (other than the obvious--do I like the patterns,...
