Re: Young persons Making An Effort

I just think it is funny/cute/endearing how we as a group will scrutinize and criticize and debate the shape of a pocket on the Duke's jacket, but let so many horrific faux pas pass with something like this. Maybe I am just jealous that I never have and never will have an opportunity to wear my tai...

Re: Young persons Making An Effort

Not bad. However, I'm of the opinion that if you don't need a watch for formal occasions, you shouldn't need a mobile phone either. At least leave it in the car. I of course refer to the young lady a few pictures in. What is she talking about that is so much more important, anyways? I speak as someo...

Re: Cap-Toed Oxfords With Dinner Suit

Allen-Edmonds used to make a plain wholecut, but it appears to be discontinued now. I think they'd look great with black tie.

Re: White tie accessories

From what I've seen on someone who does just what I described, it doesn't look too big.

Never been a fan. It tends to remind me of Gordon Gekko!

Re: White tie accessories

I've read exactly the opposite, that you're supposed to get your regular collar size on the shirt and size up a half inch on the collar. I'm wondering why this is so either way -- why don't makers allow for this?

Re: White tie accessories

I'm surprised you didn't mention anything about studs, Costi. I was under the impression a two-stud marcella front shirt was absolutely necessary.

Last-minute sartorial checkup

I'm going to my grandparents' 50th anniversary party. A big deal and all. I leave for Montréal next Thursday. I've decided to wear this double breasted suit, but still not sure what tie. While this tie has a blue background, I think it may be suitable against the darker navy due to the contrast in s...

If I were in your position, I'd be tempted by the stunning simplicity of Cary Grant's 6x2 overcoat.

Re: Bespoke shirt (Massatelier Fasan, Berlin) - please comment!

They make their shirts with a six button front rather than seven. I'm not sure why. From what I understand shirt makers (including Brooks) used to have six buttons on shirts when men wore their trousers higher, but they weren't spaced as wide as that.

Thank you for the writeup! This is exactly the sort of thing I look for to further my understanding of how clothes best work together. :)

Re: Cap-Toed Oxfords With Dinner Suit

I think wholecuts would be fantastic provided they had highly polished calf leather, didn't look overly fashion-y with a chiseled toe or really narrow last, and no broguing -- which most wholecuts seem to have off the rack. I think such a shoe would be hard to find and might need to be bespoke. Pate...
