Re: No perfumes, but very fine linen, or?

I think that I can top that NJS. At university I was given Latin tutorials by the keeper of the Rare Books Room in the Cambridge University Library. When the time came for a bit of Virgil he produced Milton's own text (with the poet's annotations in the margins) for us to work from.

Re: Silk Knots

I much prefer silk knots for the same reasons as Michael above - I prefer their lightness and their ability to stay out of the way when using a keyboard etc. These advantages are lost when you have two lumps of metal clanking at your wrists. On the less is more principle I also find them aesthetical...

Re: A Quick Trip to London

Hello Uppercase, Sounds like your trip was something of a curate's egg. Yes the butcher on Mount St. is Allens. As of last week Bates is sadly now closed (though resurrected on a diminished scale in the premises of Hilditch & Key). The reason Dunhill on Jermyn St. has shrunk is that they've opened a...

Re: T.M. Lewin quality and low-end or mid-end shirts

The soft collar of a TML (unlike the hard scratchy collar of a Pink shirt) is indeed comfortable but, as noted above, the collars are always a size too small for the body of the shirt. Their fabrics also tend to deteriorate badly. The quality at CT has gone downhill badly. The fused collar has a ten...

Re: Visit to Huntsman Part 1

Interesting to see some discussion devoted to Huntsman which, of all the great names on SR, is the least discussed here on the LL. I agree that they have the most attractive window display on the Row (though I also like the simplicity of Norton & Sons's "only one dummy in the window at a time" appro...

And also like the little yellow Porsche in Commando. :D In one scene A. Schwarzenegger smashes it up, in the next he drives it away in pristine condition.

Cleverley/Alexander McQueen

If you're passing Cleverley's shop take a look in the window. They are currently displaying Alexander McQueen's last and a paper pattern for a pair of his boots. A nice little memorial I think.

Re: British literary figures

I haven't seen it either, but hope it's better than the awful giant kissing couple also at St. Pancras. London has seen a proliferation of public sculpture in recent years, none of which is of very good quality. The new war memorials (Women of WWII in Whitehall, the Battle of Britian freize on the E...

Re: English suts give backache - according to Tom Ford

Readers of the latest edition of the Rake will have seen the Tom Ford article where he repeats the back ache allegation. I assumed that he meant this in some way figuratively when I first saw the Ford/Lagerfeld interview, but the more he comes out with it I guess he really means it (unless, god forb...

Re: no blame game

That does not sound at all reasonable.

Do you mind naming the tailor? Others may have had a similar (or different) experience and be able to advise how best to deal with them.

Re: Buttoning the 6 x 3 Polo coat

Michael,

That is such a beautiful coat. It has a lovely insouciance about it.

Is the fabric commercially available? If not, is there any chance of opening a subscription in the cloth club?

Cheers,

James

Re: Evening Dress Braces.

As an anti-recommendation of where not to go for braces I would identify Knize. The buckles of their braces tarnish quickly and badly. This is not a problem I've ever had with braces from Thurston. I used to believe that Knize sourced their braces from Thurston, but maybe not.

Re: London Restaurants

You have to be speedy to get in at any MPW restaurant these days. His latest, Luciano in St. James's St., has closed after only a year or so. L'Escargot seems to be winding down its operations. What does that leave - just the Criterion and the pizza place with Frankie Dettori? Such is the (not undes...

Re: Paul Stuart New York

They do carry a peculiar mix of products. If you go RTW then I would recommend Paul Stuart before anywhere else. They also have some beautiful shirts, ties and pocket squares. But some of their products, especially in knitwear, are revolting - what the poster above referred to as Palm Beach (I think...
