Re: Ducks by Shattucks

Beautifully carved. I'm increasingly noticing that people who are talented with their hands in one sphere are often similarly gifted in other forms of close, precise work. A friend of mine is a prominent neuroscientist; when he interviews new applicants to his lab, the first thing he looks for is so...

Re: George Hamilton's Wardrobe

I just noticed a rather envy-inducing reference to George Hamilton in the September 14 issue of The New Yorker : "He remarked that it was his mother who taught him how to dress, which reminded him of how the Fiat magnate Gianni Agnelli had provided him with a bespoke wardrobe -- which reminded him t...

Re: Thoughts of home

Thank you, Mr. Storey. Beautifully written, and very very moving. One of the (meagre) consolations of exile is the marriage of lyricism and clarity when writing of Home. Distance allows us to surmount the quotidian; leave aside our gripes about this or that government policy; forget our distress at ...

Marcelo,

I believe it is a coat for a lady -- hence the right-over-left buttoning.

Re: Crocs shoe firm going under

I don't usually delight in the misfortune of others but I have to say that from an aesthetic point of view this is wonderful, wonderful news.

Re: Who makes the best British ties?

Drakes make for A&S too. I bought a PoW check tie there last summer and I wondered aloud if they were by Drakes; Karl the salesman said yes, and seemed proud of the fact. I also have Drakes ties made for Paul Stuart. All Drakes ties are uniformly excellent. The silk is wonderful, and the lining must...

Foyles is wonderful, but book lovers must exercise extreme caution. You might think you're just going to pop in for ten minutes, but when you eventually stagger out you find years have passed and your heirs are fighting over your estate.

I remain very interested in the heavy sand or tobacco linen proposed in another thread. Does that look likely to happen?

Dear Sartorius, The image is not from a Flusser ad, but from a 1988 magazine article on NY tailors, although your assumption is understandable, given the lack of context for the image. Marcelo posted the link elsewhere on this forum. The original article is here: http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=V...

The Charlie Rose show archives are useful for watching bespoke suits in action. There are some more promising examples of elegance to be found. Perhaps Michael would like to comment on art dealer Guy Wildenstein's dress: http://www.charlierose.com/view/interview/8521 (see particularly his standing c...

Thank you for the link, Michael -- it is indeed illuminating. Rubinstein's own personal elegance is very much on display in the first segment of the programme, seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=To4Ndog4-NA&NR=1 His hat, muffler, and coat (and are those dove-grey gloves visible for a split-se...

Dear Mr. Storey, Yesterday I was delighted to find your lovely book at Books Kinokuniya in Kuala Lumpur's Twin Towers. Its style is measured, charming, and eminently readable, and it is as reliably full of wisdom and information as your posts here. It has added a most pleasurable sartorial note to t...

Why not take your suits along to Huntsman and ask them if they can be altered or recut to fit you? I'm assuming they were originally made for a relative, and you have inherited them.
