Elegantly patterned socks

Where does one find socks with the patterned elegance displayed in Etutee's splendid articles?

Currently Edward Green carry a highly limited range of houndstooth socks. When I collected my rather lovely "Windsor" shoes, I purchased a small selection of socks that were in stock. (Incidentally, the shoes are scrumptious. Thank you, Michael.)

Any suggestions on other stockists of high quality patterned socks of the sort depicted in Etutee's articles and Flusser books?

I occasionally see patterned socks around Jermyn Street and Savile Row. Nothing spectacular. As I hate short socks, there is nothing I can do: other than those dreadful Burlington checks, nobody does kneelength.

Was in the Dore Dore shop in Paris on Saturday. Underwhelming, to say the least.

Patterned kneelength socks do not seem to exist. Neither does silk hose in anything other than black or navy. Either this is a niche nobody has filled so far, or our sock tastes are perverse and depraved, and completely incomprehensible to everybody else.

They have some lovely patterned long socks (at a price).

At least some of Arnys socks are made by Pantherella and at sales times you can find at Harrods sub-standard Pantherellas in fiver packs. I have a few of those Harrods/Pantherella socks and I believe, I’ve seen the same patterns at Arnys: grey and black heringbone, another design has tiny paisleys scattered over the socks.(Unfortunately those 5-er packs are always assorted, you’ll never find five pairs of the same pattern.) Also try Selfridges, they have a range of Japanese socks (some long) in various patterns and some nice colours.

Any manufacturer can make up socks in almost any pattern, but of course, they will expect a minimum order for setting up their machinery. Shops are just not adventurous enough to place an order.

What about the LL looking into placing an order for some Retro socks?

Arnys socks are much more expensive than Pantherella. Mr Kabbaz carries a wide, wide range of Pantherella and probably has some OTC patterns. Richard James now sells Pantherella-made socks in OTC lengths with patterns -- that some might find OTT.

One of the greatest italian company producing high quality patterned socks is Gallo. In their catalog you can find a line called Windsor that speaks for itself.
Gallo (Desenzano - Italy) socks ara available in many countries.
These socks will last for many years due to their very high quality. Regards.

TVD: I am in accord in loathing short socks and find nothing suitable whilst mooching around Jermyn Street or Savile Row.

Rolf: Thank you for the suggestion. I'm due a trip to Paris next month and will go to Arnys with my bag, ready to stock up on those lovely patterned long socks. My tendency is to avoid Harrods but I shall check Selfridges.

rjman: When next on Savile Row I will inspect Richard James but I suspect the patterns will be a little more intense than my courage.

upmann/uppercase: Gallo is an intriguing suggestion about which I plan to interrogate Google. Can you tell me any more about their availability either in the UK or online?

So would I -- with emphasis on high. I'm long-legged, so few hose sold as over-the-calf really are, for me: result, tumble-down knit wool, silk, or cotton halfway through the day (if not long before).

Alex - Thank you. I've made a note. Cashmere and silk sounds splendid.

I was passing Liberty today. They have a very poor selection of hosiery, mostly garish and of nasty materials. The Pantharella selection were all of polyester. Liberty seem set to follow Selfridge's down the fickle and fashionable path. Only a Drakes' necktie, on sale, made the visit worthwhile.

Well, I triple-Lutzed the poor fellow on the second day of the trial with navy pinstripe suit, grey diamond printed socks (like a minimalist argyle), and a chocolate brown tie with a subtle paisley. It's much better than it sounds...

It was a civil matter, so no jury, but a very alert judge. I think we have it by a nose...
